You’ll no longer have to strap your old desktop Mac to your back to carry around serious computing power – you can do all the same things with the iPhone 5.
While a wave of largely positive reviews of the iPhone 5 rolls in, a pair of numerical benchmarks give an idea of just how powerful the phone has gotten. The iPhone 5 scored a 1,601 on Geekbench, against a baseline of 1,000, the mark for the 2003’s PowerMac G5 1.6 GHz. Higher scores are better, and scores that are twice as high indicate twice the performance.
“So, as of this week, we have computing performance in our pants pockets that nine years ago required a professional desktop workstation,” noted John Gruber on his blog, Daring Fireball. By comparison, Primate Labs, the maker of Geekbench, noted the average score for a third-generation iPad is 777 and the average score for the iPhone 4S is 638.
Another test, run by the blog Anandtech using smartphone benchmark tool SunSpider, turned up similarly impressive results.
“The result is the fastest SunSpider test we've ever recorded on a smartphone,” Anand Lal Shimpi and Brian Klug wrote on Anandtech.
