Teenagers flock to smartphones

While it's likely not a surprise that teenagers are big users of smartphones, recent data from Pew Research Center highlighted just how much the teenage segment loves mobile devices and explained how this group is making use of the technology.

According to ReadWrite contributor Brian S. Hall, U.S. teenagers have passionately embraced smartphones since the technology's emergence, and Pew Research's data shows that this “mobile first” mentality to the internet is not likely to slow down anytime soon. The study showed that 37 percent of teenagers in the United States have a smartphone. Furthermore, half of teens with a smartphone access the internet primarily using the device.

And the winner is…
While it is clear that teenagers love their smartphones and enjoy constant connectivity, they have a range of device options. So, which smartphone in particular do teenagers gravitate toward? A recent survey published by Piper Jaffray analysts indicated that teenagers prefer Apple gadgets. Specifically, the survey found that 48 percent of teens already own an iPhone, up from 40 percent last fall. Furthermore, 62 percent of teens intend to get an iPhone for their next mobile device, while only 23 percent intend to purchase an Android-powered device. High school senior and tech blogger Alex Guyot recently shared his perspective on the Piper Jaffray survey.

“Overall, Apple has simply done an amazing job at entrenching themselves in the minds and hearts of teenagers,” Guyot wrote. “Despite the results of any studies or articles saying otherwise, I can easily assert that the demand for iPhones from the teenage audience is in no way waning. In fact, more teens seem to want iPhones than ever before. Certainly there is still a presence of Android owners, which while clearly not as large as the number of students with iPhones, is still a competitive force, but the loyalty of this presence to its chosen operating system seems to be shrinking much faster than it's growing.”

As teenagers flock to their favorite smartphones, it is important to remember that these devices can be broken. Furthermore, it is fair to say that teenagers tend to live a more active lifestyle than other older iPhone owner demographics.
