T-Mobile recently announced that 2013 would be the year that it finally began to offer Apple's iPhone, and it appears its users are eager for the addition. TmoNews reported that since the announcement, T-Mobile has already seen more than 1.9 million iPhones brought to its network, and that number is growing by 100,000 devices monthly. The carrier's network reached its goal of being iPhone-ready by the end of 2012, making it the last of the four major U.S. carriers to officially offer the iPhone.
As it rolls out support for the iPhone, however, T-Mobile USA is experimenting with ending smartphone subsidies, the Wall Street Journal reported. The provider suggested the model would cut down on monthly fees, saving customers money, but some analysts question whether consumers are willing to pay the full cost of the phone upfront.
The newspaper reported that all the major U.S. wireless carriers have eyes on T-Mobile as they make this move, but some providers are already going ahead with an unsubsidized model. Walmart and Straight Talk Wireless have announced they are now carrying the iPhone 5. Consumers will have to purchase the iPhone at full price without carrier subsidies, but will be offered a $45 unlimited talk, text and data plan without any built-in contract.
