So you dropped your iPhone in water…

iPhone /

It happens. After all, with roughly 70 percent of the world covered in water, it's hard to keep that precious iPhone away from H2O forever. Let's face it – there's literally limitless ways your device can come in contact with water. From placing it on a countertop that's wet to submerging it full-on in the ocean, accidents like these happen. But before rushing off to a cell phone repair shop, here's some at-home steps you can take to potentially mitigate any water damage:

  • Put the phone in a bag of riceThis is a tried-and-true DIY method for a reason – it tends to work. The key here, though, is to do it correctly. First of all, the rice you place your phone in needs to be uncooked, because then the grains will still have the absorbing qualities that will hopefully extract the water from the device. Second, be patient. Keep it bagged up with the rise for at least 24 hours to ensure the rice does its job fully. And finally, tightly seal the bag. No excess air, if you can manage it.
  • Silica Packets.  Rice is good, but silica packets – which are specifically designed for keeping things dry – are better, according to AppStorm.
