It’s hard to believe there was a time when Apple’s portable devices were best known for playing music. With the high-profile releases of the iPhone 5 and the latest iPod touch, the humble iPod nano has gotten less attention, but reviewers have taken on the device and come back with some encouraging insights.
“For most uses, it just may be the best nano yet,” wrote MacWorld’s Dan Frakes. He applauded the updated interface from the previous nano, which had no buttons and a tiny touch screen. The current model has buttons to adjust volume and a home button similar to the iPhone’s, as well as a screen around double the size of the previous version. It also uses the new Lightning connector and EarPods headphones. Frakes also noted the return of video, pointing out the device might be most desirable for parents looking for a media player for their kids.
The Verge’s Nilay Patel suggested the device might be best for runners looking for a lightweight device, and he gave high marks for the long battery life. He also noted the nano’s resemblance to a little iPhone.
Both reviewers were somewhat skeptical, however, that the nano would have more appeal for most people than the iPod touch, which is only slightly more expensive.
