Research firm names Apple’s App Store No. 1

Technology market intelligence firm ABI Research recently performed its Competitive Assessment of the storefronts for mobile applications, ranking the leading app distributors according to performance in implementation and innovation. ABI Research announced that Apple took the No. 1 spot in implementation, beating out both Google and RIM.

“The company's superior performance in this dimension is mainly down to its effective approach to monetization, large market share over the app industry, and the ability to achieve a large inventory of titles while maintaining a reasonably strict quality control,” ABI Research stated in a release.

However, researchers noted that Apple may soon face pressure to innovate. Microsoft managed to narrowly beat Apple in the report's innovation measurement, while Google Play came in third.

“Although Apple has done a great job capitalizing on App Store's head start as an app distributor, it should really start rethinking the way it charts the top apps,” ABI senior analyst Aapo Markkanen said.

CNET reported that, while Apple was ousted by Microsoft in the innovation category, its leads in app sales, apps offered and numbers of devices were enough to secure its position at the top of ABI's list for app stores.
