The days of scratched iPhone screens may be on their way out.
The scratch-resistant sapphire glass used sparingly on the iPhone 5S may be making its way to the screen of the iPhone 6. A report from International Business Times AU claims that the surface, which is currently only in use on the camera and Touch ID home button on the most recent model, is a major focus of Apple, which reportedly invested half a billion dollars to speed-up production from GT Advanced Technologies.
Sapphire glass is 2.5 times more durable than Corning Gorilla Glass, which is currently used by many smartphone manufacturers, according to The Week UK. Apple is hoping to accomplish the delivery of “low cost, high volume manufacturing of sapphire material” to allow mainstream access to the phones that utilize the surface, but many industry analysts are expecting the bill for the iPhone 6 to inflate accordingly.
Until then, however, iPhone screens are unquestionably vulnerable to scratches and cracks.
