This past year was a big one for Apple, and you might already be well aware if you're looking down at your favorite Apple device. The company announced on January 7 that its customers have downloaded more than 40 billion apps since the App Store's launch in 2008, with more than half of that number coming from 2012 alone.
"It has been an incredible year for the iOS developer community," said Apple Senior Vice President of Internet Software and Services Eddy Cue. "Developers have made over seven billion dollars on the App Store, and we continue to invest in providing them with the best ecosystem so they can create the most innovative apps in the world."
Apple detailed that there are more than 775,000 apps available for download in the App Store, with more than 500 million user accounts set up. In addition, December was a record-breaking stretch for store activity, with more than 2 billion downloads in that month alone.
CNET noted that over the last year the App Store's growth has been particularly impressive. In June, Apple made a similar announcement that the store had reached 30 billion downloads and 400 million active accounts. Research firm Flurry Analytics reported that App Store activity is only expected to accelerate in 2013.
