More kids using smartphones, tablets

It seems like kids are using mobile devices like smartphones and tablets more frequently on a daily basis. But just how much more? A recent study by Common Sense Media found that children under 9 years old are using these devices three times as much in 2013 as they did in 2011, reported WISHTV.

The research found that 40 percent of families with children 9 years old or younger own tablets in 2013, a 500 percent increase from 2011. The percentage of kids who use a smartphone was also up, as three in four have access to these devices today.

While some think that smartphones and tablets are causing children to spend even more time in front of a screen, the research found that total screen time went down between 2011 and 2013, Bloomberg Businessweek's Joshua Brustein stated.

“The inexorable march toward zombie children who are glued to screens from an early age isn't quite a reality, according to this survey,” wrote Brustein. “Kids are watching much less television overall, and they are not simply making up the difference by spending more time on mobile devices.”
