Pretty soon, you won't have to switch from your iPad mini to your regular iPad, iPhone or MacBook if you want to see something on the screen with total clarity. According to analysts at NPD DisplaySearch, a Retina version of the iPad mini is expected to arrive as soon as fall of this year, while a second version with an updated processor will likely land in the first part of 2014.
Richard Shim, an analyst at the firm, told CNET that mass production of display panels for the device is expected to begin in June or July. The 7.9-inch screen will have a resolution of 2,048 by 1,536 pixels, giving it a display density around that of the iPhone 5 and giving it one of the sharpest tablet displays on the market. Many competitors such as Amazon's Kindle Fire are expected to follow with similar products, Shim noted.
The update will come be a welcome addition to the device's feature set, TechCrunch's Darrell Etherington noted.
“A Retina screen on the iPad mini would help Apple address the only real shortcoming reviewers and critics have identified on the tablet thus far,” he wrote. “When the first reviews hit the web, mention of the lack of a Retina display was almost universal, though few cited it as a dealbreaking oversight.”
