It’s official: Apple and AT&T confirm huge iPhone 5 pre-order numbers

We already knew the iPhone 5 was a big hit when pre-sales sold out in an hour on Apple’s website, but new announcements from AT&T and Apple make the phone’s record popularity official.

AT&T announced September 17 that pre-orders during the first weekend the iPhone 5 was offered made it the fastest-selling iPhone ever for the company, which was originally the exclusive iPhone provider.

Shortly after, Apple also released a statement confirming that iPhone 5 pre-orders topped 2 million sales in the first 24 hours. The company said that number exceeded its initial supply and that some customers won’t get their iPhones until October. Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of marketing, also noted that these sales had “shattered the previous record held by iPhone 4S.”

According to 9to5Mac, the pace of iPhone 5 sales works out to 1,388 purchases per minute, and the product boxes from those sales laid end-to-end would measure 190 miles.

Customers who want to get their hands on an iPhone 5 on the September 21 release date can still head to an Apple store or a wireless carrier’s retail locations. Those who don’t want to fight the crowds might want to hold onto their old iPhone; with iPhone repair from iResQ it’s easy to fix problems like cracked iPhone screens and more.
