In business and education, iPad adoption is on the rise

The image of the business user hooked to his or her BlackBerry may soon be a thing of the past. In a recent presentation at the Gartner Symposium/ITxpo, Peter Sondergaard, Gartner’s senior vice president of research, told the audience that iPads will outnumber BlackBerrys in enterprise use by 2014, according to AllThingsD.

Noting that CIOs at some businesses are ordering tens of thousands of iPads, Sondergaard predicted that 70 percent of mobile workers will be using a tablet or tablet-like device by 2018, AllThingsD reported. The analyst also claimed that, within two years, tablets will be the primary mobile platform for field sales forces in 20 percent of sales organizations.

Business isn’t the only place seeing changing trends in mobile devices, either. Educational software company Blackboard and education nonprofit Project Tomorrow recently released a study showing that nearly 50 percent of high schoolers and 40 percent of middle schoolers now own or have access to a tablet or smartphone. School administrators are increasingly open to incorporating mobile devices in schools, researchers reported.
