How to tell why your iPhone 5s speaker’s not working

iPhone /

The problem with iPhone 5s speakers not working is understanding why they have stopped. Frequently, these kinds of issues can be alleviated by tending to the software on the phone, not the hardware, but there is always the risk of the hardware being part of the problem. As with all iPhone problems, the first step is diagnosing exactly how your phone has been broken and how that can bee fixed, before moving on to the more complicated process of actually fixing it. Luckily, the diagnostics you will need to run on your phone are relatively few for this particular issue.

What makes speakers not make sound
One of the most common reasons for a speaker to not emit sounds in an iPhone 5s is something caught within the headphone port. This can happen when even something very small has managed to get itself wedged in there, tripping the sensor that detects whether or not the iPhone 5s should play sound through its jack or through its headphone jack. Using a small piece of tape wrapped around the end of a toothpick or paperclip is an easy way to pull anything that may have been stuck inside the iPhone right out of it.

There are may be software issues involved that make your iPhone 5s speaker not work, according to Digital Trends. Switch the Loud/Silent switch on the exterior of your iPhone to make sure it hasn't accidentally been set to the silent setting. If that is the case, then no sound will play no matter what else has been switched on in the phone. It is also a good idea to go into Volume under Settings and check there to see if the phone has been set to silent there. Finally, if none of the above are working, you may need to hard-reset your phone. After hard-resetting the phone, the next best option is to restore your phone to its factory settings. Be aware that this will completely blank out any information you had stored on the device, so it is in your best interests to back it up through iCloud or iTunes.

If none of the above options work, then you do not have a problem with your software. You'll need to work to replace the hardware in your iPhone.

Replacing a speaker in the iPhone 5s
There are three options when deciding how to replace the speaker in an iPhone 5s. You can either repair it yourself, send it to Apple, or send it to a specialist. Working with someone who has the tools and expertise necessary to repair your iPhone 5s is recommended over the first option if you are not well-versed in dealing with mechanical hardware. If you want to take apart your phone, there is a guide located at iFixit here, which details the steps necessary to repair your iPhone and replace the earpiece speaker.  In order to replace your iPhone 5s speaker you may need some specialized tools, including a suction cup, Phillips #000 Screwdriver, P2 Pentalobe Screwdriver, some plastic opening tools and the iPhone 5 earpiece speaker itself.

If you don't think that you can mange this, or if you feel as though the problem of dealing with a variety of different new tools in order to open a complicated little box full of highly-damageable parts might be too difficult for you to deal with, there are other options. Instead of sending your phone to Apple, you may find that it is more worthwhile to work with someone like us, who are able to offer lower rates and a speedy delivery policy that will have your iPhone back to you in no time.
