How to access a locked iPhone by restoring to factory setting

iPhone /

It can be surprisingly easy to find yourself locked out of your own iPhone. Stories abound of people recovering lost devices, buying used devices with unknown passcodes already implemented or simply not remembering passcodes.

One quick fix for those who have purchased a used iPhone is to reset the device to its default settings. This action can transform the previously used device to function as if its brand new.

To reset a device to default settings, turn the iPhone completely off. Next, open up iTunes on your computer and connect the USB cord to the computer but hold off on connecting the phone. Then press and hold the home button on your iPhone while simultaneously connecting the USB adapter to the phone. Continue holding this button until iTunes displays this message: “iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. You must restore this iPhone before it can be used with iTunes.”

Click “Okay,” and release the home button. You will then be prompted to “Restore and Update,” and verify your agreement with the iPhone licensing. After the restore is completed, your device will likely reboot and work as if it were fresh from the factory.
