How durable is the iPhone 5?

iPhone /

No sooner had the iPhone 5 gone on sale than people were trying to figure out how easy it was to break. And the results of several tests suggest that the iPhone is pretty darn durable.

The blog Android Authority performed a drop test that pitted the iPhone 5 against the Samsung Galaxy S3 in a series of drops from increasing heights. The blog found that the iPhone 5’s aluminum case handled the impact of the drops well, particularly as compared to the Galaxy S3, which suffered damage to its case and glass.

“As much as we hate to admit it, the iPhone 5 did amazingly well in our drop test, while the Samsung Galaxy S3 came out in pretty bad shape,” wrote Android Authority’s Bogdan Petrovan. “It’s the cold hard truth that we can’t hide and we can’t ignore.” Another staffer called Apple’s device “rock solid.”

Apple news site 9to5Mac reported on some similar tests and also came away impressed.

“The new iPhone 5 could be one of the most durable we have seen yet,” wrote site staffer Jordan Kahn. Of course, durable doesn’t mean indestructible, and many iPhone 5 users are likely to find their drop tests – planned or unplanned – go less smoothly. For those users, iPhone repair from iResQ is the perfect way to handle cracked glass or other damage.
