Desktops? Those are so passe. Laptops? Please, 2011 is calling. This year, it's all about tablets! The Chicago Tribune recently cited a poll conducted for Thomson Reuters, which indicated that approximately one-third of U.S. consumers are contemplating purchasing an electronic tablet this holiday season. The survey additionally found that 22 percent of consumers with their eyes on these devices plan to reduce spending on other holiday purchases so they can afford one.

What tablets are in highest demand? According to the Tribune, Apple's full-size iPad is the tablet most sought after, with 25 percent of those surveyed indicating it as their top choice. The iPad mini is not doing so well with the holiday crowds, and only 8 percent declared this device their first choice.

“Apple sold about 11 million iPads during the 2011 holiday quarter, and this year analysts expect it to sell about 16 million iPads and 8 million iPad mini tablets,” said Jharonne Martis, director of consumer research for Thomson Reuters.
