Apple races ahead to lead in PC shipments

More people than ever own computers, and it looks like Apple is reaping the rewards. Global client PC shipments rose 12 percent in the second quarter of 2012, with Apple seeing a 59.6 percent growth from the second quarter of 2011 to 2012, according to a recent report by Canalys. One advantage for people who like Apple is that MacBook repair is readily available if their device goes haywire.

The company said pad computers – a segment Apple's iPad leads in – had the single biggest growth of the quarter, rising 75 percent to 24 million units. In total, pads represented 22 percent of all PC sales.

“Reports that poor economic conditions and the wait for Windows 8 hurt the PC industry this quarter do not tell the whole story,” said Tom Evans, research analyst at Canalys. “The PC industry is performing well and 2012 is shaping up to be a record year. Vendors with innovative products will reap the rewards.”
