Attendees at Apple’s October 23 media event were expecting an iPad announcement of some sort, but they weren’t counting on one that was quite this big. In addition to unveiling the iPad mini, Apple debuted the latest version of its flagship tablet, the iPad 4.
Although some commentators questioned the arrival of a new model so soon after the launch of the third-generation iPad in March, others praised the device’s improved specs. The new iPad features the same 9.7-inch Retina display, but it uses an A6X processor, which promises to double performance speed. It also introduces the Lightning connector, announced in September with the iPhone 5, to the iPad, as well as 802.11n Wi-Fi, promising faster connection speeds of all kinds.
“The fourth-generation iPad is everything that the ‘new iPad’ should have been,” wrote eWeek’s Don Reisinger. “And with a new processor that promises far better performance, it might just be what the corporate world is looking for in a business-class tablet.”
