Apple encourages customers to reset

iPhone /

You'd think Apple would be doing everything in its power to entice people to visit an Apple Store. But the company is trying to cut down on one type of visitor: The customer coming to the Genius Bar with a broken or malfunctioning iPhone.

As Rick Broida recently pointed out on CNET, Apple's online Genius Bar reservation system now includes a page encouraging iPhone users to reset their device and see if this resolves the issue.

The text at the top of the webpage says, “First, try this simple step,” and goes on to describe the process of holding down the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button for 10 seconds, until the Apple logo appears on the screen.

Broida asserted that resetting the device often fixes issues like crash-prone applications. He also pointed out that resetting the iPhone is not the same as restarting it, which is done by holding the Sleep/Wake button until a red slider appears, and sliding that icon. However, restarting can also fix some problems.

The reset instructions don't currently appear as part of the Genius Bar reservation process for iPods, iPads or Macs, to Broida's confusion, since the reset process works for all these devices.

While resetting the device may solve many issues, not all  problems can be resolved with the quick fix. And if your Home button itself is broken, resetting the device might not be such a simple proposition. But don't panic if this is the case, you can turn to the iPhone repair experts at iResQ.
