New data provides more fuel to support Apple's rise in popularity to the top of the mobile device food chain. According to a recent report from research firm comScore, Apple took the second spot out of all U.S. mobile phone makers, the first time on record that Apple has placed at that level.

The report indicated that Samsung maintained its lead in total U.S. market share, with 26.3 percent of the overall mobile phone userbase – including users of both smartphones and non-smartphones. Apple followed Samsung in second place, with 17.8 percent of the market share. Apple beat out LG by 0.2 percentage points. From August 2012 to October 2012, Apple gained 1.5 percent of U.S. mobile subscribers, which is the most significant increase of all the major mobile phone makers. LG, Motorola and HTC all experienced a decline in their percentage of U.S. mobile subscribers.
